          Clary Sage

 

        

Sweet with musk and wine-like undertones

 

DO NOT USE DURING PREGNANCY.  Not be used when alcohol has been consumed. Do not use if you have low blood pressure.

 

Clary Sage essential oil soothes, relaxes and warms. It is a generally uplifting essential oil when used in moderation. Contains a hormone-like compound similar to estrogen that regulates hormonal balance resulting in its use for moderating PMS symptoms. Massage Clary Sage essential oil on muscles and on abdomen before and during menstruation. Induces feeling of well-being. Enhances dream state and has sensual properties. Clary Sage is a powerful muscle relaxant and is especially useful where muscle tension arises from mental or emotional stress. 

When using aromatherapy to address physical conditions, this essential oil is good for hair and skin treatment and treating wrinkles

 

Blends well with: Lavender

 

In a blend:

  • To relieve muscle tension add a few drops of this essential oil to a carrier oil for a massage
  • Add a few drops to jojoba oil or coconut oil for perfume type body oil.
  • Clary Sage is a very popular addition to skin care products because it is very useful for inflamed skin, and may help to stimulate hair growth when massaged into the scalp.  Add a few drops to a scentless lotion for use on your body or add to your shampoo.

          Clove Bud

 

Cautions: A very powerful oil which should be used with care. Not suggested for use as massage oil as it can be highly irritating to the skin.

One of the spices known and extentsively used by the Romans.

Warming, spicy tonic. A powerful antiseptic, which makes it useful for all kinds of infection; also a known carminative.

A well-known toothache remedy. Also used in the past to soothe stomach upsets. Used as a food flavoring agent.

          Eucalyptus

 

The essential oil of eucalyptus is obtained from the leaves and the branches of the eucalyptus tree, also known as the fever tree.

They had used the oil as a remedy for skin problems and fevers. Modern herbalists rely on the oil to treat these conditions as well as colds and other respiratory ailments. The oil is a fine decongestant and has strong germicidal and antibacterial effects.

The principal active ingredient in eucalyptus oil is "eucalyptol" which has strong germicidal and disinfectant properties. It also functions as a diuretic, lowers blood sugar and helps to relieve coughs and fevers. Eucalyptus oil is an effect analgesic and is often used in preparations designed to relieve muscle, nerve and joint pains. On a psychological level, it helps to combat exhaustion and dispels mental sluggishness.

For wounds and abscesses, the strong germicidal effects of the eucalyptus oil can help heal wounds, burns ulcers and insect bites or stings.  To suppress coughs, make a chest compress with the eucalyptus oils and massage oil and it will help loosen phlegm and improve lung functions. Eucalyptus oil is also great for the use in a sickbed environment. Five drops of the oil in a diffuser will kill germs in the air and reduce the number of airborne bacteria.

For external uses:

To lower a fever with a eucalyptus calf wrap. Add five drops of eucalyptus essential oil to one quart of lukewarm water. Soak linen or cotton cloths in the mixture. Then wrap the cloths around your calves and secure with dry cloths. Calf wraps should be used only when the feet are already warm.

For dandruff, mix ten drops of eucalyptus oil with your shampoo. Massage well into scalp and wait a few minutes before rinsing with warm water.

To alleviate cold symptoms, place a few drops of the eucalyptus oil on a handkerchief and deeply inhale the aroma when needed.

To relieve sinus and chest congestion, muscle aches and pains, mix ten to fifteen drops of the eucalyptus oil and two oz. of sweet almond (or grape seed oil). Massage into muscles in a circular motion.

Keep eucalyptus oil away from children under the age of six. Do not use on sun burn skin or wide open wounds.

          Geranium

 

Geranium essential oil is distilled from the leaves and stem. It is often used to help treat disorders of the skin and reproductive system.

 

For the body: Geranium is most closely associated with the skin and reproductive system. It is an effective essential oil and helps to ease the discomfort associated with dermatitis, dry/oily skin, eczema, cold sores, shingles, ringworm, hemorrhoids, psoriasis, athlete’s foot, impetigo, boils, painful periods, fibroids, fluid retention, hormonal imbalances, swollen breasts, menstrual irregularity, premenstrual tension, pregnancy, cystitis and night sweats. It can improve the appearance of stretch marks and varicose veins and easing colitis, diarrhea, peptic ulcers, acid indigestion, gastroenteritis and gallstones.

 

For the mind: Geranium is commonly used to ease anxiety, depression, postnatal depression, emotional and nervous exhaustion, mood swings, overwork, and insomnia.

 

Blends well with: sandalwood, peppermint, lavender and tea tree.

 

In a blend: 3 drops in 4 teaspoons / 20 ml of carrier oil.

          Lavender

 

Lavender essential oil is ideal for treating bruises – it will help to ease the discomfort and will also encourage healing.

 

For the body: Relieves muscle spasms – especially in overworked muscles – as well as those caused by spastic colon, constipation, or irritable bowel; relieves itching from insect bites and stings as well as itching caused by eczema and dermatitis; reduces bacterial and fungal infections, thereby relieving conditions such as acne, cystitis, thrush, and athlete’s foot; stimulates the immune system; relieves minor burns and heals wounds and bruising; helps to lower blood pressure; relieves pain related to headaches, migraines, endometriosis, and swollen breasts; eases breathing difficulties caused by asthma, and emphysema.

 

For the mind: Aids in relieving anxiety, depression, insomnia, panic attacks, or cravings following the withdrawal of addictive substances – such as caffeine, nicotine or alcohol

 

Blends well with: sandalwood, peppermint, geranium

 

In a blend: 4 drops in 4 teaspoons / 20 ml of carrier oil.

          Peppermint

 

Peppermint essential oil helps to ease mental fatigue and improve powers of concentration, which is ideal for anyone studying for exams.

 

For the body: Peppermint is useful for muscular aches and pains, arthritis, sprains, strains, acne, poor concentration, varicose veins, colds, sinusitis, diarrhea, flatulence, gastritis, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion, morning sickness, nausea, stomach cramps, vomiting, painful or swollen breasts, painful periods, lack of periods, headache, migraine, neuralgia, sciatica, toothache, fevers, and hangovers.

 

For the mind: Peppermint is an effective stimulant. Use it for poor concentration and mental fatigue, and to improve memory retention, clear confusion, and improve decision making.

          Sandalwood

 

The essential oil is extracted from the inner wood of the tree, and also from the roots. Sandalwood soothes fear and is a decongestant.

 

For the body: Sandalwood helps to clear acne and balance oily skin, it also helps to ease dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, chronic bronchitis, laryngitis, catarrh, mucous, coughs, and sore throats and to clear varicose veins and hemorrhoids. It is also extremely useful in treating cystitis.

 

For the mind: Use sandalwood to soothe fear, paranoia, lack of confidence or loss of sexual drive, restlessness, and insomnia.

 

Blends well with: clove, lavender, geranium

 

In a blend: 3 drops in 4 teaspoons / 20 ml of carrier oil.

          Tea Tree

 

Tea Tree oil is extracted from the leaves of the tree, which grows in Australia. Small branches are also used.

 

For the body: Helps to fight bacterial, viral and fungal infections such as acne, athlete’s foot, cold sores, impetigo, nailbed infections, ringworm, warts, and chicken pox; eases mild inflammatory conditions such as insect bites and stings, bronchitis, cystitis, and sinusitis. Tea tree is also an excellent supporting oil for the immune system, and helpful for people with post-viral fatigue or recurring glandular fever.

 

For the mind: Helps to relieve lethargy, chronic anxiety, and poor concentration.

 

Blends well with: lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus

          Ylang Ylang

 

Ylang Ylang is good for the complexion, skin and hair, reduces anxiety, stress, PMS and muscle tension, lowers blood pressure and relieves insomnia. It is considered a potent aphrodisiac.

Ylang Ylang soothes and calms the spirit and body and crates a sense of well-being. It is helpful in relieving the effects of tension, anxiety, and stress. It is also effective as an aphrodisiac, relaxing the mind and body while heightening the senses. Ylang Ylang has a rich fragrance which makes an intriguing perfume. The scent lingers and can be used to provide fragrance to linens. It can be added to a facial massage to benefit from its moisturizing and balancing properties. Ylang Ylang is suitable for both dry and oily skin types.

Blends well with: Sandalwood & Geranium

 

In a blend:  

 

For an uplifting bath: Add six drops directly to a full tub of warm water or blend with ˝ oz. bath oil base.

For a moisturizing steam facial: Use four drops in a steam facial to moisturize and cleanse.

 

 

PRECAUTIONS: Highly concentrated amounts may cause headaches with some individuals.
